Avoding Thesis Avoidment

by Carson Reynolds

Inevitably, when working on a thesis there come these moments when you stumble across a new idea or project. Typically the line of thought is: “I wonder if anyone has done X? No?! Well, if it weren’t for this thesis eating up all my time, I’d do something like X!” Of course the whole reason you’ve no time is because (hopefully) your thesis is already a member of the set things-that-no-one-has-done.

To get around this little circularity of thought, I’ve gotten into the habit of writing down these things (to presumably work on later). A couple recent ones:

  • Reusable proofs of work to screen comment-spam
  • A distributed bibliographic tool using RSS for syndication or some peer network-topology like bittorrent
